I’ve seen this many times in movies and TV, a character seems like an ass, mean as can be, and later they find out that deep down they are a sweetie and very endearing. Contrast this with meeting someone who seems really nice almost perfect and later they find out the dark side of that person.
So the moral here is to be mean and curmudgeonly so people will love you when they find out you aren’t always that way. If you look like you are too close to perfection people will look for flaws and despise you when your true self is revealed.
